Enjoy the Freedom of a Motorhome

There are a number of factors to be considered when tossing up between a caravan, camper trailer or motorhome as your recreational vehicle. The different vehicles offer varying benefits depending on your lifestyle and individual needs. In this article, we're looking at motorhomes - what they offer to travellers and holidaymakers, the pros and cons, the cheap finance available for motorhomes and check out some of the latest models.

While you consider the options and weigh up whether or not you should get a motorhome or a traditional caravan, keep in mind that Jade Caravan Finance offers the same cheap interest rates for motorhome loans as we do for caravans. So no problems on that front.

Features, Benefits, Considerations

Campervan v motorhome – the difference is essentially in size and the level of facilities included. A campervan is more a vehicle with accommodation while a motorhome is more like a caravan with vehicle incorporated. (Our simple take on the difference!)

Compared to a caravan, with a motorhome you don’t need a vehicle large enough to tow a caravan with comparable accommodation. With some motorhomes, only a standard driver licence is required, while some larger models will require a higher class of licence.

Having the all-in-one does allow for greater freedom, ease of handling and possibly more flexibility on where you can travel and where you can stay. But once at a location, you don’t have a separate vehicle for sightseeing and trips to the shops. Though many motorhomes can be fitted with bike racks so you can take a cycle with you for that purpose.

Popular Models

Some caravan manufacturers also manufacture motorhomes but most tend specialise in one or the other. Winnebago is probably the most well-known name in motorhomes and has become somewhat synonymous with the vehicle and the generic name.

Winnebago

While many associated Winnebago with the US, the brand is manufactured in Australia from a facility in Brisbane. So the locally built vehicles are manufactured to meet local regulations and to handle local conditions. The current range, powered by either IVECO or Mercedes-Benz depending on the model, includes 8 models with accommodation from 2 to 6 people.

The Winnebago Byron is one of the largest in the range, sleeping 6 and with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2.2 litre 4 cylinder upfront. The layout is cleverly designed to optimise the space in this 25’3” overall length vehicle. According to the manufacture, a C standard car driving licence is required. The interior is light and contemporary and includes ensuite with a separate shower and toilet, dinette which converts to a bed and an extremely well-equipped kitchen.

Avida

Avida is a very well-respected RV manufacturer and presents 7 models in their current motorhome selection, 5 of which only require a standard driver licence, one requires standard and LR and one requires a medium rigid licence. There are a number of different configurations available including bed over cabin, storage over cabin and slide-outs. There are both on road and multi terrain models and Avida also use either Fiat, IVECO or Mercedes-Benz chassis/power.

The smallest in the Avida range is the Leura which offers large lounge/dining space and an electric roll down bed to maximise the space for daytime use.  The Leura has the Fiat Ducato chassis/power and all the kitchen and bathroom requirements to make for easy, compact living on the road.

Sunliner

Sunliner is another great Australian RV manufacturer which offers 8 motorhome models in their range. Compacts, drop-down bed models, multi-terrain versions, premium and luxury models and a top of the range Monte Carlo. This is a very large and well-equipped vehicle with zoned spaces and includes an Isuzu diesel engine chassis which requires a medium rigid licence. This is truly for the very discerning traveller who intends to be on the road for sometime.
