Judging the Annual Top 20 Beaches
The announcement of the 2022 list of top beaches was made on 30 January 2022 by Dan Tehan, Federal Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment and Mr Brad Farmer. Mr Farmer has been appointed by Tourism Australia as a beach expert and Friend of Australia. His credentials as a judge for the best beaches include visiting most of the accessible beaches in Australia as research for his nearly 40 years of writing about our beaches.
The 2022 winner’s list focuses on locations that are nature-based, celebrate the cultural value of our coastline to First Nations people and include a number of very quirky places that are easily reached from major cities.
In making the announcement of the beaches judged by Mr Farmer, Minister Tehan noted how tough the judging task must have been with over 11,000 Australian beaches to select from. Mr Farmer said that after long periods in lockdown, Australians were keen to enjoy the sand by holidaying at home and this selection of diverse and magnificent beaches offered that opportunity.
When judging the 2020 top beaches, Mr Farmer set somewhat of a precedent when he placed the beach at Wagga Wagga, an inland NSW regional centre, at number 9 on the list. This was the first time an inland river beach was included and it recognised how valuable the water experience is to rural and regional communities. So for those planning a beach discovery trip in their RV, it doesn’t have to be entirely coastal.
Phillip Harrison, the Managing Director of Tourism Australia explained that in judging the top beaches Mr Farmer had explored the coastline, searched inland areas and the islands which lay off the coast.
Australia’s Top 20 Beaches for 2022
The list of top beaches for this year has been described as compelling due to the cultural connections with First Nations and several inclusions that are not often discovered through internet searching. All states and territories are included on the list.
Topping the list at number one is Misery Beach which is a little-known spot on the southwest coast of Western Australia near Albany. Second place went to Horseshoe Bay at NSW’s South West Rocks, followed by The Spit at the Gold Coast in QLD, Flaherty’s Beach on the SA’s Yorke Peninsular with Loch Ard Gorge at Port Campbell in VIC rounding out the top 5.
Next on the list is The Neck on Tasmania’s Bruny Island, Blue Pearl Bay in the magnificent Whitsundays in QLD, Depot Beach on the NSW South Coast, Murrays Beach in the Jervis Bay Territory of NSW and ACT, and at number 10 it’s Darwin’s Dundee Beach.
