With the South Australian Government holding the state borders shut during the COVID-19 crisis, South Australian travellers have to limit their travels to their own state. But what great limitations to enjoy. Great beaches and coastline, fabulous wine country and the awe-inspiring outback all at your doorstep.
When travelling through South Australia, you’ll have the opportunity to explore historical townships and support the local communities which may have been hit hard with the tourism shutdown, bush fires and drought.
Greenrise Lake, Penola
For those heading into the Coonawarra region, there is a free site for self-contained vehicles near Penola. It is reported to have good facilities including BBQ, flushing toilets but is advised for dry weather only. There is a 48 hour limit, which is fair so all can share.
Point Brown
More a suggested destination site as this does not have facilities but is a great location for off road vehicles. Pets are permitted and there are large amounts of parking available. You’ll have around 20klm of dirt road to get there, but apparently it’s worth it.
Tenbury Hunter Reserve
If you’re after a waterfront location, head to this site which is right on the mighty Murray River. The site is free as is the ferry which operates on a 24 hour service. According to the reviews online, this site has coverage for mobile phones which is a bonus plus fireplaces. Big rigs can access and you can bring your pets. For such a great site the 5 night limit is an additional bonus.
Whitewell Tank Campsite
This free site is located on the road to Head of Bight. It’s fenced and has a paved surface which doesn’t make it suitable for tents but good for vehicles. You’ll need a self-contained vehicle as it there are no facilities but a great place to put on your list if you want to head off in that direction for whale watching.
Worlds End Gorge
This is a popular holiday spot but apparently plenty of space but not a lot of facilities. No shower, no water, no mobile reception but there are toilets. Caravans and big rigs and pets are welcome. It’s located 26 lm south east of Burra.
